Cost and money
Car insurance in Marion County
Florida's legal minimum is unusual, and the unusual part is what it leaves out. A policy that satisfies the state can leave you personally exposed in an ordinary crash.

Bottom line
- Florida requires $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability to register a vehicle. It does not require bodily injury liability, which is the coverage that pays for injuring someone else.
- You need the insurance before you can register. Call the insurer before the tag office, not after, and note that new residents have 10 days to register once they take a job or enrol a child in school here.
- This site publishes no average premium, because the figures circulating online come from lead-generation sites and cannot be checked. Get real quotes on your own vehicles and your own driving record.
Two things about car insurance in Florida surprise people who move here, and one of them is a genuine financial exposure rather than an inconvenience.
What Florida actually requires
Before you can register a vehicle with at least four wheels in Florida, FLHSMV requires proof of two coverages:
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP): a minimum of $10,000. It covers 80 percent of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 from a covered injury, regardless of who caused the crash.
- Property Damage Liability (PDL): a minimum of $10,000. It pays for damage to someone else's property caused by you or by someone driving your insured vehicle.
Proof must come from an insurer licensed in Florida, which means an out-of-state policy will not satisfy the requirement even if it is a better policy.
The part that matters: what is not on that list
Bodily injury liability is not required to register an ordinary vehicle in Florida.
That is the coverage that pays when you injure another person. A policy that meets Florida's minimum — $10,000 PIP, $10,000 PDL — carries none of it.
Think about what that means in an ordinary crash. You are at fault. Somebody else is hurt. Their medical bills run past what their own PIP covers. Your policy contains nothing that responds to their injury, so the claim is against you: your savings, your house equity, your future income.
That is not an exotic scenario. It is a Tuesday afternoon on a busy arterial.
Most people carry bodily injury liability anyway, and the additional premium for meaningful limits is almost always smaller than people expect relative to what it protects. If you are arriving from a state that required it, do not treat Florida's silence as permission to drop it — treat it as a gap you have to close deliberately.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage deserves the same thought, for the same reason: in a state where the minimum is this thin, the driver who hits you is more likely than average to be carrying very little.
Why there is no average premium on this page
The same rule this site applies to homeowners insurance applies here.
The figures you will find online for "average car insurance in Ocala" come almost entirely from sites that earn money when you request a quote. The underlying basket is not published, the methodology is not published, and the number cannot be checked. Rule 10 on this site says every number cites a source or is deleted, and "the average premium" has no source worth citing.
What determines your own premium, in rough order:
- Coverage choices — limits, deductibles, and whether you carry the optional coverages above the state minimum.
- Your driving record, and everyone else's on the policy.
- The vehicles — value, repair cost, safety features.
- Annual mileage, which is going up (see below).
- Where the car is kept.
- Credit-based insurance scoring, where permitted.

The sequence, and the deadline
New residents get this in the wrong order constantly:
- Call your insurer first and arrange a Florida policy with PIP and PDL.
- Then go to the tag office with the proof, the title and the rest of the paperwork.
Florida gives a new resident 10 days to register a vehicle once they accept employment here or enrol a child in a Florida school, and 30 days for the driver's licence. There is also a one-time new-resident fee on first registration that is larger than people expect.
All of that is on the first-30-days checklist, in the order that stops you making the trip twice. Vehicle work here is handled through the Tax Collector's offices rather than a separate DMV, which is not obvious if you are used to another state.
The mileage question
Your premium is partly a function of how much you drive, and moving to Marion County usually means driving more.
The county is 1,588 square miles at 237 people per square mile with no practical transit. Groceries are a drive. The doctor is a drive. If you are arriving from a city where one household car was plenty, you are probably looking at two — two policies, two fuel budgets, two sets of tyres.
And if the plan involves a commute out of county — 37 miles to Gainesville or 76 to Orlando — the annual mileage is a rating factor as well as a running cost. Tell the insurer the truth about it; a policy rated on mileage you are not doing is a problem waiting for a claim.
Where to take a problem
A question about a policy, a claim, a denial or an insurer's conduct goes to the Florida Department of Financial Services' Division of Consumer Services. Rate filings are reviewed by the Office of Insurance Regulation.
This site has no relationship with any insurer and cannot have one. The reason is on the affiliate disclosure page and it is a legal constraint rather than an editorial preference.

Common questions
What is the minimum car insurance in Florida?
A minimum of $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability, both required before you can register a vehicle with at least four wheels. FLHSMV states that PIP covers 80 percent of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 from a covered injury regardless of who caused the crash, and that PDL pays for damage you cause to someone else's property.
Does Florida require bodily injury liability?
Not as a condition of registering an ordinary vehicle, and this is the single most important thing for a new arrival to understand. Bodily injury liability is the coverage that pays when you injure another person, and a policy carrying only the state minimum does not include it. Most people carry it anyway, because without it a serious at-fault crash comes out of your own assets.
How much is car insurance in Ocala?
This site does not publish an average, and the reason is the same as for homeowners insurance: the figures on the open web come almost entirely from sites that make money on the quote, and none of them can be checked. Your premium depends on your vehicles, your driving record, your coverage choices, your credit where permitted, and how many miles you drive — which in a car-dependent county is more than you may be used to.
Do I need Florida insurance before I register my car?
Yes. Proof of Florida PIP and PDL from an insurer licensed in Florida is required at registration, so the sequence is insurer first, tag office second. Doing it the other way round is the most common wasted trip for new residents, and a new resident has 10 days to register once they accept employment or enrol a child in a Florida school.
Will my mileage go up in Marion County?
Almost certainly, if you are arriving from a city. Marion County is 1,588 square miles at 237 people per square mile with no practical transit, the mean commute is 26.8 minutes, and a household with two working adults generally needs two vehicles. Annual mileage is a rating factor as well as a fuel cost, so budget both.
