Affiliate disclosure
This site makes money two ways: display advertising, and affiliate links. Here is exactly what that means and, more usefully, what it rules out.
Affiliate links
Some links here are affiliate links. If you follow one and buy something, this site may earn a commission, at no additional cost to you. Every affiliate link is marked in the page's HTML as sponsored, and any page carrying one shows a disclosure at the point you would encounter it — not only on this page.
The categories this site uses affiliate links in:
- Long-distance moving companies — no program in place yet, so these render as plain text rather than links
- Rental trucks and trailers — no program in place yet, so these render as plain text rather than links
- Self storage — no program in place yet, so these render as plain text rather than links
- Moving supplies — no program in place yet, so these render as plain text rather than links
- Utility connection service — no program in place yet, so these render as plain text rather than links
The categories this site will never take money from
No mortgage, lender, insurance, title, escrow, home-warranty, appraisal or home-inspection affiliate relationship. No lead form that routes to one. Ever.
This is the most important thing on the page, and it is not a preference. Under the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, accepting a fee for referring you to a settlement service provider is prohibited for anyone in a position to make that referral — and unlike an ordinary conflict of interest, it is not something a disclosure fixes. You cannot disclose your way out of Section 8.
So the entire category is off the table, and the site is built so it cannot drift back in: the affiliate list is a single data file, and the check that runs on every build fails the deploy if a key in it matches any of those categories.
The practical effect for you is that when this site tells you what drives a Florida homeowners insurance premium, or what a wind mitigation inspection is worth, there is nobody paying for that answer.
Display advertising
This site carries display advertising served by a third-party network. Those ads are selected by the network, not by this site, and their presence next to an article is not an endorsement. When advertising is running, the network may set cookies and collect data about your visit; what that involves is described on the privacy page.
What advertisers and affiliates do not get
No advertiser or affiliate program decides what appears here, sees anything before it is published, or can have a page changed. Nothing on this site is recommended because it pays.
That is a claim about advertisers, and it is the only claim of its kind this page makes. This site does not describe itself as independent or unbiased, because the person who owns it has a direct commercial interest in one of the subjects it covers. What that interest is, in plain words, is on the about page and the editorial policy page — and the rules that exist specifically because of it are on the second one.
