The springs, the forest, the equestrian center, the restaurants, the golf, the drive times to a beach — what there actually is to do once the boxes are unpacked.
Ocala is an hour and a half from two coasts, sits on top of one of the largest concentrations of freshwater springs in the world, and is surrounded by a national forest big enough to get lost in. That combination is genuinely unusual, and it is most of the reason people who move here from somewhere flatter and further north stay.
These pages are about what there is to do and how far away it is — the springs and the forest, the drive times to a beach or an airport, what healthcare looks like locally, and what retiring here actually involves day to day. Drive times are given honestly, including the ones that are longer than people expect.
If you are trying to picture a weekend here, read the Ocala National Forest and beaches within reach. If you are moving with an eye on the practical end of things, hospitals and healthcare and airports and drive times matter more than either, and both are the sort of thing people research only after they have moved.
The thing worth saying plainly is that almost none of this is walkable. Ocala is a driving county, the distances are real, and a spring that is forty minutes away is a deliberate afternoon rather than something you wander to. That suits some people enormously and is a genuine adjustment for anybody arriving from a city where the answer to an afternoon was the end of the street. These pages give the drive times rather than the marketing version, because the drive is the part you will repeat every week.
