Cost and money

A monthly budget for a couple in Ocala

Most cost-of-living pages give you one number. This one gives you the lines, says where each came from, and tells you which four you have to fill in yourself.

Bottom line

  • The sourced lines: HUD puts a two-bedroom in the Ocala metro at $1,373, Census puts median owner costs with a mortgage at $1,406, and EIA puts the Florida residential electric bill at $130 in March and $222 in August.
  • The unsourceable lines are homeowners insurance, groceries, car insurance and health insurance. This page tells you why rather than inventing an average for each.
  • Two adults in Marion County generally means two cars. That is the line people from cities leave out, and it is a large one.

Every cost-of-living page you will find gives you a single number. This one does not, on purpose: some of the lines in a Florida household budget have a published source behind them and some do not, and mixing the two produces a total that looks authoritative and is partly made up.

So here are the lines, with the sourced ones marked and the rest flagged.

Housing: the line that decides everything else

Situation Monthly Source
Renting a two-bedroom $1,373 HUD FMR, Ocala MSA, FY2026
Renting a one-bedroom $1,172 HUD FMR, FY2026
Median gross rent, all renters $1,277 Census ACS 2020-2024
Owning, with a mortgage $1,406 Census ACS 2020-2024
Owning, no mortgage $499 Census ACS 2020-2024

The spread between the top and bottom of that table is larger than every other line on this page put together. A couple who own outright and a couple carrying a mortgage are running different budgets, not variations of one.

Note that the Census owner figures include property taxes and insurance, and the renter figures do not include renter's insurance, which you should carry anyway and which is cheap.

If you are buying, the property tax component is your own to calculate rather than inherit: the 2026 proposed millage runs from 12.9474 to 19.0895 mills depending on the taxing district, and the seller's figure is almost never yours. Use the property tax estimator and read Marion County property taxes explained.

Electricity: budget August, not the average

Florida residential, 2025 Monthly bill
March (lowest) $129.75
Annual average, 2024 $156.09
July $214.28
August (highest) $221.97

Sourced from EIA's monthly filings. The swing is air conditioning and it is a usage effect rather than a price effect — 860 kilowatt-hours in March against 1,444 in August.

The instruction is simple: budget near the top of that range, and treat the cheap months as a rebate. Utility bills in Ocala by season has the full curve and the levers that actually move it.

Water, sewer and waste: possibly zero, possibly not a bill at all

In large parts of Marion County the house is on a private well and an onsite septic system. That is not free — the well's pump is on your electric bill, the septic system needs periodic pumping — but it does not arrive as a monthly invoice, which makes it easy to omit and unpleasant to discover.

Which arrangement applies is an address-level question. So is which electric utility serves you; the county is split between several.

Transport: two cars, probably

Marion County is 1,588 square miles at 237 people per square mile with no practical transit and a mean commute of 26.8 minutes. If both of you work outside the home, budget two vehicles.

Per vehicle, the lines are: payment or depreciation, insurance, fuel, tyres, maintenance, and registration. Florida's insurance minimum is $10,000 PIP and $10,000 PDL and does not include bodily injury liability — see car insurance in Marion County for why most people carry more than the minimum.

This is the single most common omission in a budget brought from a city, and for two adults it is a large one.

The four lines this page will not invent

Homeowners insurance. The largest risk to a Florida housing budget, priced on the specific building, and unsourceable at a county level. The published averages come from lead-generation sites and cannot be checked. Get real quotes on the actual address during the inspection period — what actually drives your Florida home insurance premium explains what is being priced.

Groceries. There is no metro-level grocery price index for Ocala. BLS publishes regional CPI for four census regions, and "the South" averages Ocala together with Miami, Dallas and Baltimore. Comparing Ocala to that figure compares it to itself. The honest method is to take your current grocery spend and adjust for Florida's 6 percent state sales tax plus the county surtax on the taxable items.

Car insurance. Same reason as homeowners: the averages circulating online are marketing, and your premium depends on your record, your vehicles and your mileage. Quote it.

Health insurance. Entirely dependent on age, employer, marketplace subsidy and Medicare status. Marion County's under-65 uninsured rate is 15.2 percent against 13.6 percent for Florida, which tells you about the county and nothing about your premium.

What Florida takes, and does not

Does not take: state income tax on any individual income, which is constitutionally prohibited. For a working couple that is a real monthly difference against most states — the honest arithmetic is here.

Does take: 6 percent state sales tax plus a county discretionary surtax, on the taxable part of what you spend. And property tax, which funds what other states fund from income tax.

How to actually use this page

  1. Pick your housing row from the first table. That is most of the budget.
  2. Add $222 for electricity, and be pleased in March.
  3. Add your well and septic reality, or your utility bills, for the specific address.
  4. Add two vehicles if you both work outside the home.
  5. Go and get real quotes for homeowners and car insurance, on the actual house and the actual cars.
  6. Carry over your own grocery and health figures, adjusted.
  7. Then total it, against the income you will actually have here — Ocala pay vs Ocala cost of living is the other half of the sum.

The cost-of-living worksheet on this site is built around exactly this split: you supply what you know about your own spending, and it supplies the two lines it can genuinely source.

Common questions

What does a couple need to live in Ocala?

It depends most on whether you rent or own and whether the house is paid off, because that one line dominates. The sourced anchors: HUD's FY2026 Fair Market Rent for a two-bedroom in the Ocala metro is $1,373, Census puts median monthly owner costs with a mortgage at $1,406 and without one at $499, and the Florida residential electric bill averaged $156.09 a month in 2024. The lines this page cannot source — insurance and groceries chief among them — are the ones you have to price yourself.

Is $4,000 a month enough for a couple in Ocala?

This site will not answer that as a yes or no, because the answer turns entirely on your housing situation and your insurance. A couple with a paid-off house at $499 of median monthly owner costs is in a completely different position from a couple renting at $1,373 or carrying a mortgage at $1,406. Use the worksheet with your own numbers rather than a headline figure from anywhere.

Why does this page not give a total?

Because a total would be made partly of numbers this site cannot source, and once one invented figure is inside a total the whole total is invented. Four lines — homeowners insurance, groceries, car insurance and health insurance — have no checkable local published figure. The page gives you the sourced lines, flags the rest, and leaves the addition to you.

How much should a couple budget for electricity?

Budget the August bill rather than the annual average. Florida residential averaged $221.97 in August 2025 and $129.75 in March 2025, on a nearly flat price per unit — the swing is air conditioning. An annual average of $156 is arithmetically true and describes a month that barely occurs.

Do we need two cars?

If both of you work outside the home, in practice yes. Marion County is 1,588 square miles at 237 people per square mile with no useful transit and a mean commute of 26.8 minutes. Two vehicles means two insurance policies, two fuel budgets and two maintenance schedules, and it is the line most often missing from a budget carried over from a city.
