Moving budget calculator

This supplies the lines, not the amounts. The value is in the costs people forget about until they arrive — the deposit you will not get back, the two weeks of double rent, the registration fees waiting here.

Bottom line

  • The quoted price of the move is rarely the cost of the move. Overlapping rent, a deposit you do not get back, and the first Florida insurance premiums paid up front are usually bigger together than the truck.
  • Vehicle registration in Florida costs meaningfully more for a car arriving from out of state than for one already here, because of a one-time initial registration fee on top of the ordinary charges.
  • Leave a buffer line and put a real number in it. Every move has something in it that nobody budgeted for.

The lines people forget

The quoted price of the move is the part everyone budgets. It is rarely the biggest part.

The overlap. Almost nobody hands back one set of keys on the morning they collect the next. Two weeks of paying for both ends is normal and it is a real line.

The deposit you do not get back. Budget for getting none of it and be pleasantly surprised. If you are breaking a lease, find out what the penalty actually is in writing before you plan around a number somebody told you on the phone.

Arriving. Utility and internet deposits, the Florida driver's licence, the title and registration on every vehicle, and the first insurance premiums — which in Florida are frequently wanted up front for the year rather than spread monthly. That last one catches people who have only ever had insurance escrowed into a mortgage payment.

The replacements. Things that do not survive the truck, things that do not fit the new place, and the specific Florida category of things you did not need where you came from. If you are moving to acreage and have never had a well, a septic system or five acres of grass before, there is equipment in your future.

Vehicle registration is the one that surprises people

Florida charges a one-time initial registration fee when a vehicle is registered in the state for the first time, and it sits on top of the ordinary title and plate charges. It is per vehicle, so a household arriving with three cars pays it three times.

The Marion County Tax Collector handles this locally and publishes the current amounts; the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles site has the statewide rules. Both take appointments, and in the weeks after a move an appointment is worth more than it sounds.

Where the moving links on this site come from

Some pages here carry links to long-distance moving companies, rental trucks and trailers and self storage. Where those are live, they are affiliate links and are marked as such. That is exactly why there are no dollar figures pre-filled in the worksheet above: a site that earns a commission on a moving booking has no business telling you what a move typically costs.

What this calculates, and on what assumptions

This one is a worksheet, not an estimator, and the distinction is the whole design. It gives you the full list of lines a move to Florida actually generates — including the several that people discover after they have already committed to a number — adds up whatever you put against them, and holds the total in the page's address bar so the link you copy carries your own figures.

It pre-fills nothing, and that is deliberate rather than unfinished. A moving cost depends on distance, volume, season, how much you do yourself and what a specific company quotes you in a specific week. Any figure printed here would be a stranger's move rather than yours, and would be wrong in a direction you could not see.

What this cannot tell you

It cannot quote you. Nothing here is a price, an estimate or a range, and no number in the worksheet comes from this site. For the lines that need a real figure — movers, a truck, a storage unit — the number has to come from the company that would be doing the work.

It also cannot know your timing. A move at the end of a month, at the end of a school year, or into hurricane season prices differently from the same move six weeks either side of it, and the same is true of a deposit-and-first-month gap if your sale and your purchase do not land on the same day. The worksheet has rows for those; it cannot fill them in.

Common questions

Why are all the boxes empty?

Because this site will not publish a moving cost figure it cannot cite. The cost-per-mile and average-cost-of-a-move numbers on the open web come almost entirely from moving-company marketing pages, and this site carries moving affiliate links — so publishing them would be putting a number with an interest behind it in front of you. The lines are the useful part. The amounts come from your own quotes.

What do people most often leave out?

Three things. The overlap, where you are paying for both places for a couple of weeks. The deposit at the old place that you are told you will get back and do not, or not all of it. And the arrival costs — utility deposits, the Florida licence and registration, and the first insurance premiums, which in Florida are frequently demanded up front for the full year rather than monthly.

Is registering a car here expensive?

More than you would expect, because Florida charges a one-time initial registration fee on a vehicle being registered in the state for the first time, on top of the ordinary title and plate charges. It applies per vehicle, so a household bringing three cars pays it three times. The Tax Collector's office handles it and publishes the current amounts.

Should I budget for storage?

Only if your dates do not line up, which is more common than people plan for — closings move. If there is any gap between leaving one place and getting keys to the other, the cost is storage plus a second partial move, and the second move is the part that gets forgotten.

Does this include the down payment or closing costs?

No. This is the cost of the move itself. Closing costs are a different conversation and Florida has its own conventions about who pays for what.
