Work and economy
Commuting from Ocala to The Villages
A place that is 57.6 percent retired generates a great deal of work for people who are not, and a lot of that workforce lives in Marion County.

Bottom line
- About 21 straight-line miles from Ocala, computed from Census Gazetteer internal points — the shortest of the three out-of-county commutes this county makes regularly.
- The demand is structural: Sumter County is 57.6 percent aged 65 and over with 25.8 percent labour force participation, so the healthcare, hospitality, retail and services workforce has to come from somewhere, and a lot of it comes from here.
- Housing is why. Marion County's median home value is $243,100 against Sumter's $385,400 — a 37 percent difference for a drive most people would accept anyway.
This is the shortest of the three out-of-county commutes Marion County makes in volume, and the economics behind it are more interesting than the drive.
A note on the name: The Villages is a census-designated place and a taxing district on Marion County's own rolls, which is why it appears by name here. This site does not name residential developments; a place on a map is a different thing, and that exception is logged.
The distance
About 21 straight-line miles from Ocala, from Census Gazetteer internal points. The road route is longer, and the destination covers a lot of ground, so where inside it you are going matters.
| Straight-line miles from Ocala | Miles |
|---|---|
| The Villages | 21 |
| Gainesville | 37 |
| Sanford | 59 |
| Orlando | 76 |
At 21 miles this is barely further than some intra-county drives — Dunnellon is 18 from Ocala — which is most of the reason it is a mass commute rather than a specialist one.
Why the jobs are there and the houses are here
This is a genuinely unusual local labour market, and two Census figures explain it.
| Sumter County | Marion County | |
|---|---|---|
| Aged 65 and over | 57.6% | 29.7% |
| In the civilian labour force, 16+ | 25.8% | 49.0% |
| Median value, owner-occupied home | $385,400 | $243,100 |
| Growth, 2020 to 2025 | 21.6% | 17.8% |
A county where more than half the population is retired and a quarter of adults are in the labour force needs a workforce, and it does not contain one. Nearly three in five residents are of an age to be consuming healthcare, restaurants, retail, landscaping, home maintenance, personal services and leisure rather than supplying them.
Meanwhile the housing there costs 59 percent more to buy than in Marion County, which is exactly the wrong direction for a service-sector wage.
Result: the work is there, the workforce lives here, and 21 miles of road connects them. It is one of the clearer examples anywhere in Florida of a place exporting its labour demand to its neighbours.
Ocala vs The Villages compares the two as places to live rather than as two ends of a commute.
What the work is
The employment a large retired population creates, which is a specific list:
- Healthcare and home health — clinical, nursing, therapy, home care, and the administrative work around all of it. This is the largest and best-paid slice.
- Hospitality and restaurants, at a scale that a population of that size and disposable income supports.
- Retail and personal services.
- Landscaping, maintenance and property services, year round in this climate.
- Golf course and recreation operations.
- The trades — plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing — servicing a large and still-growing housing stock. Sumter County issued 3,516 building permits in 2025 against Marion County's 5,985, in a county with about a third of the population.
Two things to notice about that list. The clinical and trades work pays well and is in demand. A good deal of the rest is service-sector work, often shift-based or part-time, and the wage matters against a commute.
The arithmetic to run
Before treating this as a solved problem:
What does your occupation actually pay at that end? A registered nurse and a retail assistant are both making the same 21-mile drive and only one of them is clearly ahead on it.
What does the vehicle cost? Roughly 42 straight-line miles a day round trip, more by road. Smaller than the Orlando commute by a factor of three, and still a real annual number.
What are the hours? Healthcare shift work and hospitality hours mean this drive is often done at times when traffic is not the problem — and also at times when being on the road alone at night is a consideration for some people.
Is there transit? No. Nothing runs between the counties that works for a shift. This is a car commute.
The growth on both ends
Worth noticing, because it says something about how durable this arrangement is.
| Population growth, 2020 to 2025 | Change |
|---|---|
| Sumter County | 21.6% |
| Marion County | 17.8% |
| Florida | 8.9% |
Both counties are growing at roughly twice the state rate, and they are growing in ways that reinforce each other. Sumter's growth is overwhelmingly retired people, which increases the labour demand. Marion County's growth is mixed, and a share of it is the workforce that demand pulls in.
That is a stable pattern rather than a temporary one, and for anyone weighing whether the jobs at that end will still be there in ten years, the demographics are a better guide than any forecast. A population that is 57.6 percent over 65 and growing at 21.6 percent does not stop needing nurses, technicians, cooks and roofers.
The summary
Of the three regular out-of-county commutes from Marion County, this is the one with the best ratio of housing saving to driving. Twenty-one miles is a short commute by any standard, the labour demand at the other end is structural rather than cyclical, and the housing difference is 37 percent on median value.
The thing to check is your own wage against your own costs. Ocala pay vs Ocala cost of living is the page for that, and major employers in Marion County covers what is available without leaving the county at all.

Common questions
How far is Ocala from The Villages?
About 21 miles in a straight line, computed from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer internal point coordinates for Ocala and The Villages CDP. The road route is longer and the destination is spread out, so where exactly you are going within it matters as much as the distance.
Why do people commute from Ocala to The Villages?
Because that is where a lot of the jobs are and here is where the affordable housing is. Sumter County's median home value is $385,400 against Marion County's $243,100, and Sumter's labour force participation is 25.8 percent against Marion's 49.0 — a very large retired population generating demand for healthcare, hospitality, retail, personal services, maintenance and the trades, served by a workforce that largely lives elsewhere.
What kind of jobs are there?
The employment a large retired population creates: healthcare and home health, restaurants and hospitality, retail, personal services, landscaping and maintenance, golf course operations, and the trades. Much of it is service-sector work, which shapes the wage level, and a substantial share of it is part-time or shift-based.
Is it a difficult drive?
It is the shortest of Marion County's regular out-of-county commutes and the least demanding, which is most of why so many people make it. The usual caveats apply — traffic builds at the approaches, the destination is spread over a large area, and where inside it you are going can change the trip by a fair margin. Drive your actual route before you assume.
Should I live in Marion County and work there?
It is one of the more sensible commuting arrangements available in this part of Florida: a short drive, a large housing cost difference, and steady demand for labour on the other end. The thing to check is the wage for your own occupation against Marion County's cost of living, because a service-sector wage and a 21-mile commute is a different proposition from a clinical salary and the same commute.
