Moving to Ocala from New Jersey
The line people quote is the income tax. The line that actually shows up every month is $1,232 against $499 — what a paid-off house costs to keep in each state.

Bottom line
- The number that matters is median monthly owner costs without a mortgage: $1,232 in New Jersey against $499 in Marion County. That is a paid-off house in each state, and it is mostly property tax.
- This is an interstate move, so the paperwork is real: a Florida licence within 30 days, registration within 10 of starting work or enrolling a child, and domicile you have to establish rather than assume.
- Housing is 46 percent cheaper and income is 41 percent lower. If your income moves with you, that is the whole deal. If it does not, do the arithmetic for your own occupation.
This is the opposite kind of move from Miami to Ocala. That one is easy on paper and hard in your head. This one is the reverse: the adjustment is mostly pleasant and the paperwork is a real project with deadlines attached.
The line nobody leads with
Every New Jersey-to-Florida piece leads with the income tax. Here is the number that shows up every single month, for as long as you own a house:
Median monthly owner costs, without a mortgage: $1,232 in New Jersey, $499 in Marion County.
That is a paid-off house in each state. No principal, no interest. It is mostly property tax, plus insurance and the rest. New Jersey costs two and a half times as much to simply keep a house you already own.
For anyone retiring, that is the whole argument, and it does not depend on guessing what the housing market does next.
The full table
| New Jersey | Marion County, FL | |
|---|---|---|
| Median household income | $103,556 | $61,010 |
| Median value, owner-occupied home | $454,400 | $243,100 |
| Median owner costs, with a mortgage | $2,829 | $1,406 |
| Median owner costs, without a mortgage | $1,232 | $499 |
| Median gross rent | $1,720 | $1,277 |
| People per square mile, 2020 | 1,263.0 | 236.7 |
| Aged 65 and over | 18.5% | 29.7% |
| Mean travel time to work | 30.5 min | 26.8 min |
| Population growth, 2020 to 2025 | 2.8% | 17.8% |
| Bachelor's degree or higher, 25+ | 43.6% | 23.4% |
Income is 41 percent lower here. Housing is 46 percent cheaper. As with every version of this comparison on the site, the question is which of those two numbers applies to you — and if your income is portable, only the second one does.
The electricity bill goes the other way
A genuinely counterintuitive one, and worth budgeting for.
| Residential electricity, 2024 average | New Jersey | Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Consumption per month | 662 kWh | 1,104 kWh |
| Price per kWh | 19.34¢ | 14.14¢ |
| Average monthly bill | $128.13 | $156.09 |
Your rate per unit drops by about a quarter and your consumption rises by two thirds, because air conditioning runs most of the year here and does not fully stop in between. The net is a higher average bill, made of low January bills and high August ones. Do not budget the Florida annual average; budget the Florida August.
The income tax, done properly
Florida levies no individual income tax and Article VII, Section 5 of its constitution prohibits one. Your saving is exactly what New Jersey was taking from you, which is on your last NJ-1040, and no estimate anybody else makes is better than the number on your own return.
New Jersey's rates are graduated, so this scales sharply with income: what no state income tax actually saves you does the arithmetic honestly, including the part Florida takes back in sales tax.
But it only counts if your domicile actually changes. This is the section to read twice.
Establishing domicile, and why it matters more from New Jersey
An intra-Florida mover has no domicile problem at all. You do. The standard evidence, all of which is on the first-30-days checklist:
- Florida driver's licence within 30 days of becoming a resident, surrendering the New Jersey one.
- Florida title and registration within 10 days of starting work or enrolling a child here. Florida wants proof of Florida insurance first — call the insurer before the tag office.
- Marion County voter registration.
- Homestead exemption on the Florida house, filed by March 1, which is a formal statement to a government body that this is your permanent residence.
- A Declaration of Domicile filed with the Clerk of Court — a dated record of intent.
- And the substance: where you actually are, day to day.
Do the whole list. Keep the dates. A half-executed change of domicile is the expensive version of this move, and the person who can tell you exactly how much care your situation needs is a tax professional, before the move rather than after.
Note also that homestead does not port across state lines. Your New Jersey history buys you nothing here; you start the Save Our Homes clock on January 1 of your first qualifying year.
What genuinely changes
Winter disappears. This is the reason most people do it and it delivers. No snow, no ice, no heating season, no salt on the car.
Summer arrives. Long, hot, humid, with near-daily afternoon storms from about June to September. It is a real adjustment and a minority of people never make it.
Density drops by a factor of five. 1,263 people per square mile to 237. Everything is further away and everything is a drive. If you are used to a Jersey town where the shops, the station and the school are within a mile, Marion County will feel empty for the first few months.
Wells and septic exist. Large parts of this county have no public water and sewer. It is normal here and it is a category of ownership that most of New Jersey does not have.
Hurricanes replace nor'easters. Marion County is landlocked, so no storm surge — but wind, heavy rain and multi-day outages are the trade. See hurricanes in Ocala and why being inland matters.
Insurance is a different animal. Homeowners insurance in Florida is priced on the roof and the construction, and it is the single most common way a budget carried over from another state turns out to be wrong. Get real quotes during the inspection period — what actually drives your Florida home insurance premium.
The three-line summary
If you are retiring and own your house outright, the $1,232-versus-$499 line is probably the most important number you will read this year.
If you are working remotely, you keep a New Jersey-scale income against a Marion County-scale cost base, and that is the best version of this move.
If you are taking a Florida job, run the numbers for your own occupation before you commit, because the income column of that table is not decoration.

Common questions
Is it worth moving from New Jersey to Florida?
Financially it depends almost entirely on whether your income is portable and how much New Jersey income tax you currently pay. The housing figures are stark: median home value $454,400 in New Jersey against $243,100 in Marion County, and median owner costs on a paid-off house $1,232 a month against $499. If you are retiring, or working remotely, or your pension follows you, the gap is real money. If you are taking a Florida job, Marion County's median household income is $61,010 against New Jersey's $103,556.
How much do I save on state income tax by moving to Florida?
Exactly what New Jersey was taking, which is on your last NJ-1040. Florida levies no individual income tax at all — the state constitution prohibits it — so the saving is your New Jersey liability and nothing more. New Jersey's rates are graduated, so the saving scales with income and looking up your own number takes a minute.
How long do I have to change my driver's license and plates?
Florida gives a new resident 30 days for the driver's licence and 10 days to register a vehicle once you accept employment here or enrol a child in a Florida school. You surrender the New Jersey licence. Florida wants proof of Florida insurance before it will register the car, so call the insurer before the tag office.
Will New Jersey still tax me after I move?
Not on income earned after you genuinely change domicile — but changing your mailing address is not changing your domicile. The evidence that matters is the whole set: Florida driver's licence, Florida registration, Marion County voter registration, homestead exemption on your Florida home, a Declaration of Domicile, and where you actually spend your days. Do all of it rather than some of it, and keep the dated records.
What will I actually miss?
Density and proximity, mostly. New Jersey has 1,263 people per square mile against Marion County's 237, which means everything there is closer — including the two largest cities in the northeast, an international airport network, and a level of retail and medical density that Marion County simply does not have. Some people find that liberating and some find it isolating, and nobody knows which they are until they try it.
